In the 19th century
the Shankill area of Belfast was industrialised first. In the
20th century it became obsolescent first.
By the 21st century, in 8 years time, it will be the community
to overcome its obsolescence first. It is a community which
is re-inventing itself The Argyle Business Centre is leading
the drive for this new Shankill, with over 32,000 square feet
of workspace.
The A.B.C. provides an opportunity and support for Shankill
people to realise again their flair, ingenuity and entrepreneurial
spirit.
The areats prospects lie in turning past weaknesses into future
strengths.

Community business supporting social
services community care, planned maintenance of NIHE houses
and environmental schemes, combined with attracting new industry
to the area and the re-training of a willing workforce on the
ground, are exciting opportunities for job creation.
Former residents are combining with present residents to build
creative partnerships with Government and the private sector
which will put the Shankill at the forefront of the community's
regeneration by the year 2000.
It is to that future vision we must now turn and apply our will
and effort.
